If it’s your first time in Thailand and you’re craving something beyond the usual Bangkok buzz, here’s a 3-night plan. It kicks off with a flight south and ends with cold cocktails on a beach under the stars. We did this trip recently — it’s easy, exciting, and full of local flavors. Whether you’re into diving, chilling, or just soaking in island life, Koh Tao’s got you.
️Day 1: Bangkok to Koh Tao via Chumphon
We took an early morning flight from Bangkok to Chumphon — it’s quick and scenic. From the airport, a convenient shuttle bus took us directly to Lomlahkkhirin Pier. There, we boarded the ferry to Koh Tao. The ride takes around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the waves, so bring motion sickness tablets if you’re prone. But honestly, the views make it worth it.
🚤 Pro Tip:
- Sit on the top deck for fresh air and the best views.
- Ferries usually have snacks and drinks on board.
By late afternoon, we arrived on Koh Tao. The crystal clear waters greeted us. Lush hills surrounded us. That laid-back island vibe instantly hit.
Check-in: Island Dive Club Hotel
We stayed at Island Dive Club Hotel, where a close friend was doing his Dive Master training. If you’re into diving, this is the perfect base. They have daily trips starting around 7 AM. Everything is managed right from the hotel.
If you’re not into diving? No worries. The vibe is chill and welcoming, even if you just want to relax.
Evening: Welcome to Island Time
Across the street from our hotel is a massage place. Thai massages cost 200 baht and feel amazing after a long travel day.
Then comes the cocktail hour.
The beach bar is directly in front of our hotel. It serves happy hours cocktail for 100 baht from 1 PM to 9 PM. We spent sunset toes-in-sand, sipping drinks, laughing, and watching the world slow down.
Day 2: Coffee, Island Eats & Live Music
Start your day slow — no rush, you’re on Koh Tao time.
Morning Options:
- The Mango Garden – Koh Tao
Cozy spot with stunning ocean views and tropical smoothie bowls. Their mango sticky rice pancakes are next level. - The Factory Cafe
For strong coffee lovers — try their cold brew or dirty chai. A great place to plan your day or meet fellow travelers.
After breakfast, explore the local beaches or sign up for a snorkeling trip. Many shops offer half-day adventures to Shark Bay or Ao Leuk.
Lunch: Legendary Duck Noodles
Walk to 995 Roasted Duck — hands-down one of the best meals we had on the island. Rich broth, tender duck, and no-frills vibes. You might have to wait, but it’s 100% worth it.
Chill or Adventure
- Beach nap? Sure.
- Book a freediving intro? Go for it.
- Or sip another round of whisky sours — you do you.
Dinner: Local Catch with a View
1/1 Bar & Restaurant Kohtao is perched on the 2nd floor above AC Bar Beach Club. We had grilled snapper, fresh squid, and spicy Thai salads while watching the beach glow in the moonlight.
After dinner, head downstairs…
Nightlife: Fishbowl Beach Bar
This is the island’s go-to for backpackers and divers. Live music, dance floor in the sand, beer pong, and DJs till late. You’ll probably meet new friends you’ll recognize all over the island tomorrow.
Day 3: Do It All Again — Or Don’t
The magic of Koh Tao is you can do as much or as little as you want. Here’s what we suggest:
- Diving? Join your dive master friend and see the underwater world.
- Massage round 2? Why not.
- Beach crawl? Try Sairee Beach then check out Hin Wong Bay.
Dinner — if you’re up for a repeat, 1/1 is great. But for something casual, grab BBQ skewers from a night market stall or poke into a reggae bar.
Nightlife: Hello Bar
A cozy open-air spot that’s a little quieter than Fishbowl but full of good vibes, good music, and chill locals. Great for pool, laid-back drinks, and conversation before or after a louder night out.
Day 4: Return to Bangkok
On your last morning, grab a final coffee from The brunch locations nearby. Take one last beach photo. Then head back to the pier. You’ll retrace the route: ferry to Chumphon → shuttle to airport → flight back to Bangkok.
🧭 All Key Spots Are Walking Distance
Seriously — the island center near Sairee Beach is compact. You can walk everywhere we mentioned in flip-flops and 10 minutes
